January 31: Snow. What else?

Wind-whipped snow
scours us of our resistance
to winter.

Eagle flies through snow
carrying my thoughts upriver
past your empty house.

Clouds shut down the last blue sky,
sink over the mountain.

Heron in the snow--
old man bent against the cold
we can only watch

For my mother, watching--

Snow starts to fall.
An Averkamp skating scene
plays out on the river.

Iced over, bank to bank--

river flows below.

Squirrel bounds through snow
ponderously.
Trying to make my mind blank.

In the grocery aisle--
pop song on the sound system,
old man sings along.

January 15: Morning Meditation 1

I begin Winter Feast for the Soul, meditating 40 minutes each morning for 40 days.

my silent cat, sitting near,
seems to understand.

January 14: Frozen

Two degree morning.
The river has closed its white door
to diving ducks.

January 13: Half Moon

Half moon in morning sky--
I smile to see
its pale, familiar face.

January 12: Snow falling on birches

Slowly falling snow--
this morning even the cat
seems mesmerized.

January 11: Birding, Rockport Harbor

We visited Rockport Harbor this morning to look for a Thick-billed Murre reported there yesterday. This relative of the puffin is a rare sight so close to shore at any time of year, so we felt fortunate that the bird surfaced several times quite close to where we were standing on the wharf. And fortunate too that we didn't have to wait any longer in the cold, raw air for the murre to appear.

Shifting skin of ice.
Diving murre, comfortable
in its element.

January 8: Cold snap

Eight degrees. Haircut--
having my hair blown dry
never felt so good.

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

January 7: Vole

Even the vole eating seed
under the birdfeeder
seems slowed by cold.

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

Waking to snow
all day we build the puzzle,

Wanting to walk on water
the kids can't wait
to test the new ice.

In one house we drive past
someone's cooking dinner.
