January 4: Tracking

Across the harbor ice

March 9: To the lake

Heading upriver
is the eagle
hoping for ice-out?

January 13: Cold morning

Up on the mountain
tall white pines silvered by frost,
crows blown by the wind.

March 8: Ice-out

Fragments of tinkling ice
shatter on the rocky shore,
lake a tragic wind chime.

December 31: New Year's Eve

Pondering impermanence--
glass of fine bourbon
with Buddha ice cubes.

January 24: Winter morning on the river

For my mother, watching--

Snow starts to fall.
An Averkamp skating scene
plays out on the river.

January 23: River ice

Iced over, bank to bank--
skaters carve circles above,
river flows below.

January 14: Frozen

Two degree morning.
The river has closed its white door
to diving ducks.

January 11: Birding, Rockport Harbor

We visited Rockport Harbor this morning to look for a Thick-billed Murre reported there yesterday. This relative of the puffin is a rare sight so close to shore at any time of year, so we felt fortunate that the bird surfaced several times quite close to where we were standing on the wharf. And fortunate too that we didn't have to wait any longer in the cold, raw air for the murre to appear.

Shifting skin of ice.
Diving murre, comfortable
in its element.

January 6: Ice

Deepest cold so far.
I stand at the window
watching the river turn to ice.

January 3: The pond ices over

Wanting to walk on water
the kids can't wait
to test the new ice.

January 6: Sliding in to work on rain-slick ice

As e.e. cummings said,
"let all go dear

December 23: Ice Storm

So precarious,
our footing
in this glittering world.

December 22: Gifts

Against the backdrop of a glittering but dangerous ice storm, we celebrated an early Christmas with my family last night, feasting on our traditional lobster stew, exchanging gifts, and cheering on the Patriots (who clinched the AFC East title).

Bounty of food, family love.
And even the Patriots
gave us a gift.

December 12: Frozen

Even cat tracks frozen
in the driveway
look vulnerable.

February 12: Ice

Last night's slush and rain was frozen on every ground surface first thing this morning, making for some treacherous walking. The birds flitting to and from the feeders taunted us with their ease of movement.

Patch of open water--
a reminder
that ice doesn't last.

December 28: Clearing

After yesterday's snow storm, shoveling the office walkways this morning with my co-workers...

Scrape of shovel,
faint crackle of ice
sprinkled with salt.
