July 3: Glimpse

The Gray Catbird is, as its name might indicate, a smooth slate grey color all over, with a black cap. But its undertail coverts, which we glimpsed when it was feeding at a suet block hanging by our kitchen window, are a surprising rusty red. A bit like catching a glimpse of a nun's fancy underpants.

On the window feeder
catbird flashes us
his red undertail.

of all the peanuts.

February 17: Come in!

Roused from our coffee
by friendly knocking--
woodpecker on suet.

Wren on the suet--
we just might make it
through the winter.

February 14: Valentine

Valentine's Day--
pair of cardinals at the feeder,
starling's wolf whistle.

Flurry of siskins
flocks the snowy feeder--
a bright storm of birds.

January 7: Vole

Even the vole eating seed
under the birdfeeder
seems slowed by cold.

November 10: Blue Monday

Most people aren't thrilled when Blue Jays dominate their bird feeders.

I wasn't expecting
my office visitor
to defend Blue Jays.

October 9: Urgency

Squadron of jays
bombards the feeders all day.
Waiting for that call.

August 5: Gathering storm

As clouds gather
the finches grow louder.
I need a nap.

the neighbors' compost bin.
Here, we feed finches.

March 4: At the window

Cardinal pauses
in his eating, watches me
for a long time.

February 6: Mouse tracks in the snow

Mouse tracks under the feeders.
I hope the birds
have been sloppy eaters.

February 4: Cardinal at dusk

Male cardinal is always one of the last birds to visit the feeder at day's end.

Lighter at 5:00pm now,
but I still can't see
the cardinal's red.
