March 4: Classics

who are our gods now
cold night alone
re-reading the Odyssey

November 20: Re-reading Bernd Heinrich’s WINTER WORLD

Shivering I read
how tree frogs survive
being frozen all winter.

November 16: Being read to

Audiobook
crime novel set in Venice—
I want to keep driving

October 8: Rainy Sunday

Lost in a book.
Out in the rain crows
making a racket.

February 13: Blizzard

Snowed in all day
focus narrowed to one book
I read a woman's life.

(Highly recommend Megan Marshall's new biography of Elizabeth Bishop: A MIRACLE FOR BREAKFAST.)

January 29: Afternoon with a book

Re-reading The Tale of Genji
I find myself longing
for... something...

January 1, 2017: Evening reading

Maine winter's night:
sitting here reading about
Monet's waterlilies.

December 28: Readings in philosophy

Existentialism--
reading as we drive home
until it's too dark to see.

November 28: Afternoon

Reading for hours
with the cat asleep on my arm.
We need each other.

Saturday, February 13, 2016

February 13: Snow day

Ten degrees, wind howling.
Curled up with a book
on the Salem witch trials.

November 15: Safe

I escape in a book,
the cat's in a box:
ways we make ourselves safe.

July 10: Today

These satisfactions--
wood lilies blooming,
a long, good book just finished.

Yes, Anthony Doerr's All the Light We Cannot See was as good as everyone is saying it is. I spent the entire afternoon sitting in the sun in my green, tree-sheltered backyard finishing it, while the vireo sang on and on over my head.

June 26: Strings of lights

Strings of colored lights--
the neighbors throw a party
while I read alone.

Sunday, April 12, 2015

April 12: Solar powered

Outside with a good book.
Stray guinea hens cackle
on the neighbor's porch rail.

November 30: Book

Holed up all day
wrapped in clouds
reading a great book.

Monday, July 28, 2014

July 28: Good book

Rain and clinging mist,
my head in the clouds all day--
unfinished book.

Reading CB Anderson's excellent book RIVER TALK. Perfect reading for a rainy summer day: resonant stories of life in the rural mill towns of western Maine, full of poignantly drawn characters living their ordinary, beautiful lives.

July 27: Rainy day with books

Finally, it rains.
I'm home alone
reading erotic poetry.

February 27: Bus trip home

Another time on a bus
I envied a blind man reading
the whole dark drive.

November 7: Dark so early

Lights of a barge
on the black bay.
Last pages of a good thriller.
