Much needed comfort.

December 10: Dark at 4:30

Waxing moon shining back in
at the newly lit
Christmas tree. And me.

November 17: Gardens Aglow!

After sunset's flare,
holding court above the lights--
supernal Venus.

November 16: White as a gull's sunlit belly

In the right light
backdrop of clouds, gull in flight
makes me think angel.

the hint of a rainbow.

December 7: Christmas lights

In Portland this afternoon to see the Nutcracker and enjoy some dumplings at Empire. The Christmas tree in Monument Square is lit; the sign on the Time & Temperature building is flashing: 20 (degrees) / BUY / LOCL; holiday lights festoon Congress St. A season of lights in the darkness.

Street lights, Christmas lights...
Moon rising over the bay
makes us say, "Oh! Look!"

June 30: End of June

The quality of light, the tone of a sultry summer evening...

Sky still light at 9.
Red Sox on the radio.
Slim new moon rising.

In the dark backyard
a clump of new daisies shining
with their own light.

Ospreys overhead.

February 18: Another storm approaches

As the day wore on
the light dimmed.
Snow falls now in the dark.

November 18: Frost Moon

Outshining the white lights
strung across the restaurant window:
November full moon.

November 7: Dark so early

Lights of a barge
on the black bay.
Last pages of a good thriller.

Home after dark,
greeted by swarming flies
drawn to the porch light.

April 6: Out on the town

Walking through the bustling streets of Portland in the late afternoon, gulls wheeling overhead in full, spring sunlight, my arms around two dear friends, happy from the day's adventures, the night's adventures still ahead of us...

Buzz of beer and sidewalk bustle--
this day's last light shines
just for us.

March 8: Light

When I have a cold in the summer, my favorite home remedy is to fall asleep in the sun in my backyard and sweat it out. Home sick today, but with the yard still covered with crusty old snow, that wasn't an option. But it was mild enough to open the solid wood inner door to let the sun and light through the glass storm door. I wanted to curl up in it like a cat. My cat, however, preferred the couch.

Sunlight on the floor--
a honey lozenge
to soothe my cold.

December 2: Winter mist

Warmer air moving in blanketed the chilled December landscape with fog. Trees looming in the mist: a backdrop for a drowsy day, especially after staying up too late socializing with friends last night. Perfect setting for a nap with the football game on, a dog warming my feet. Then the slow drive back home, following taillights through the fog.

Christmas lights in fog.
The day's a shifting dream,
blurred around the edges.
