April 30: Spring allergies

Despite the bleak setting,
my body tells me
something's blooming somewhere.

Tuesday, April 29, 2014

April 29: Chives

Shoots so green
I want to eat them like grass--
fresh spring chives.

Monday, April 28, 2014

April 28: Cats are so neurotic

Home after three days,
cat wanders the house crying,
reorienting.

Sunday, April 27, 2014

April 27: Rain on a metal roof

Such an indulgence--
I linger awhile in bed
listening to rain.

Saturday, April 26, 2014

April 26: Woodchuck

Woodchuck busily feeding
along 295--
be careful, friend!

Friday, April 25, 2014

April 25: On my morning run

Neighborhood, morning--
someone clanks a feed dish
to call a cat home.

Thursday, April 24, 2014

April 24: Big wind

All day, movement and roar,
whitecaps on the river--
no calm within.

Wednesday, April 23, 2014

April 23: Cats are nocturnal

In the pre-dawn dark
the cat sits on the pillow,
stares down at his face.

April 22: In the woods

Hiking together,
we're too noisy to hear the thrum
of a drumming grouse.

Monday, April 21, 2014

April 21: Ruby-crowned Kinglet

As I walk home from work,
sun still shining--
kinglet's ecstatic song.

April 20: Waiting for woodcocks at Lily Pond

At dusk, hoping to catch the woodcock aerial mating display. We hear turkeys gobbling, geese and ducks, peepers, robins, blackbirds, and cardinals, and catch a glimpse of an eagle chasing an osprey, but no woodcocks on this chilly night.

All at once, frogs switch on,
and one by one
Mars, Jupiter, stars appear.

April 19: Hawks returning

Here's what fills me with joy:
rich late afternoon light,
Ospreys overhead.

April 19: In the guest room

I wake before dawn.
Bright moon's a lantern hanging
in the pine's branches.

April 18: Looking up

Almost too high to see--
crow chases a hawk
out of its airspace.

Thursday, April 17, 2014

April 17: Kinglets foraging at the library on a chilly spring morning

Kinglet's ruby crown
flares, catches the morning sun.
Spring. We're all on fire.

Wednesday, April 16, 2014

April 16: Spring snowfall

I wake from strange dreams
to snow on the ground--
am I still sleeping?

Tuesday, April 15, 2014

April 15: Spring mist

Morning mist veils
bare branches.
Two vultures swoop low.

Monday, April 14, 2014

April 14: Cardinalsong

On my two-mile run
through the neighborhood,
five cardinals singing.

Sunday, April 13, 2014

April 13: The Masters

Watching golf on TV, immersed in another, much warmer climate...

Golfer about to swing.
Carolina Wren's loud song
fills the green hush.

April 12: Back in the garden at last

Today is my youngest sister's birthday, and what a beautiful day it is!

All morning I rake,
exposing tulip leaves
to the jubilant sun.

Friday, April 11, 2014

April 11: Morning phoebe

Waking to the phoebe,
reminded that spring's arrival
wasn't a dream.

These snowdrops are also a good reminder that spring is here!

April 10: Ragged robin

Tousled, missing feathers--
what has this robin been through
to get to my lawn?

April 9: Collage

I've been taking an adult ed class with artist Deb Arter on collage. Find it a meditative and messy practice, dabbling with color and texture, painting on the glue, thinking in three dimensions...

After I wash off
the glue from my hands,
my fingers feel extra-smooth.

April 8: Unbuilding a house

Our former neighbors built a new house and are tearing down their old house across the street from us. First the doors, windows, and chimney, now the roof, soon the walls and floors...

We watch it happen:
the house loses its doors, roof,
opens to spring rain.

April 7: Rain in Boston

Rain predicted here
later tonight
falls now on the Red Sox.

Sunday, April 6, 2014

April 6: Outside

Second run of spring:
the wind-blown leaves
easily outpace me.

Saturday, April 5, 2014

April 5: Snowdrops

Snowdrops--barely higher
than the frozen leaf litter.
And yet, flowers!

Friday, April 4, 2014

April 4: First outside run of the year

Gulping cold air,
counting cardinals--
so much better than the treadmill.

Thursday, April 3, 2014

April 3: Crescent moon

Rock me in your long white arms
baby all night long.
Waxing crescent moon.

April 2: What winter left behind

Between lawn and sidewalk
melting snow reveals
old cigarette butts.

Tuesday, April 1, 2014

April 1: Spring wind

One end of the string
of prayer flags
flies loose in the wind.
