Every year about this time I receive spreadsheets from an ornithologist at Colby College on which to record the spring arrival dates of bird species in my region. I guess they triggered something in my subconscious.

August 8: Winnowing

I spent the afternoon selling organic blueberries at the Land Trust's blueberry stand on Beech Hill, as the berry crew worked busily behind me feeding boxes of freshly raked berries through the winnower (which removes the leaves and greenies). Boxes and boxes of berries, berries rolling past on the conveyer, squished on the floor, piling up in buckets...

 

The winnowers

will dream streams of berries,

hear their rolling thunder.

June 10: Rescue

A friend related today how she'd rescued an Osprey that had fallen down a smokestack. And my sister got a new hip.

April 16: Spring snowfall

I wake from strange dreams
to snow on the ground--
am I still sleeping?

April 11: Morning phoebe

Waking to the phoebe,
reminded that spring's arrival
wasn't a dream.

March 30: The hawk counter's dreams

Even in her sleep

she sees swirling kettles

of vultures overhead.

March 11: Slowly the lawn is revealed

Slowly the dirty snowpack in the back yard is melting around the edges, a receding glacier. Slowly the edges of the lawn are revealed--as well as dozens of sticks and branches blown from the trees during this winter's several storms, sticking up out of the snow like black claws.

Branches reach out of snow
all over the lawn.
I dreamed zombies chased me.

November 27: In bed

I fall asleep to The Hobbit,

dream of owls,

wake to torrents of rain. 

October 17: Megunticook Lake

Lake's surface unreal, so smooth.
Thinking about last night's dream
as I drive past.

February 17: Gale

Winds loud as surf.
No wonder I dreamt
of flood tides.
