On his birthday
no fish caught
but he doesn't care

March 11: Misheard

Going out the door,
Look at the full moon!
Him: I love you too.

June 1: Insomnia

Geese pass in the dark.
At dawn, rising wind.
I listen to your breathing.

Together again
we linger late in bed
listening to the rain.

August 10: Up Mount Battie

We played tourist today. Sailed on the Schooner Surprise this morning out of Camden Harbor with (almost) my whole family, to celebrate my mother's birthday. Then we all enjoyed an al fresco lunch together on the river: lobster rolls and whoopie pies. Later, my husband and I hiked out our front door and up Mount Battie in nearby Camden Hills State Park, making the most of this long, sunny summer Sunday and a rare day off together.

Familiar trails,
same vireo singing--
you still laugh at my stories.

June 4: Borrowed shirt

His old linen shirt,
shrunk in the wash and now mine--
my possessiveness sparked.

January 19: The Men's Room

My husband is getting his hair cut at a place in Portland especially for men. Frankly, this place is a lot more fun than where I get my hair cut. Free beer, pool table, leather couch with widescreen TV playing sports, good alt rock on the sound system, a cute wandering dog, hot 30-something guys with facial hair coming and going... A thin woman all in black with long blonde hair is cutting my husband's hair, making him laugh. And you can buy a cigar on your way out.

Fashion mags tell me short hair is coming back for women.

Comforts of the hair salon.
Some days I want
to cut it all off.
