June 26: Mount Equinox

At just over 3,800 feet, Mount Equinox is the highest mountain in the Taconic range in southwestern Vermont. From Manchester Center, there's an private toll road to the top (owned by Carthusian monks) which offers some spectacular views of the Taconics, the Green Mountains, and the valley between them. And the occasional wildlife sighting.

Matters of scale:
driving down the mountain
we slow for a crossing vole.

November 20: Camel's Hump

Camel's Hump is the second highest mountain in Vermont's Green Mountains, and its peak has a unique shape visible over many miles and familiar at first glance after many months or years.

Beyond parking lot,
highway buzz, traffic lights,
Camel's Hump simply is.

August 29: Mountain nocturne

No moon tonight: clouds.
No owl: crickets.

July 25: White River

We drove on Route 107 along Vermont's White River this afternoon. The water was very low, as is typical in summer, but we could see signs everywhere of damage caused by the floodwaters of Hurricane Isabel a few years ago.

We follow the river
low now in its stony bed.
Cows graze the floodplain.

June 6: Reunion

I'm at my Middlebury College reunion this weekend, in verdant, summery Vermont, tucked in the Champlain Valley between the Green Mountains and the Adirondacks.

The only thing unchanged
after 25 years--
this mountain view.
