December 25: Watching starlings in a snowstorm

Christmas morning.
Starling on a windowsill
eating windblown snow.

December 23: Musée National de Beaux-Arts

Musée de beaux-arts—
watching a single crow
fly through blowing snow.

December 6: Basilica Ste.-Anne de Beaupre

Kangaroo, stork, ray--
surprised to find a zoo carved
on the end of the pews.

December 5: Cold morning in Quebec City

Calèche horse wears a coat.
A shop's bare-armed mannequins
make me shiver.

December 4: Vieux-Quebec

Above the cold river,
above the lit-up Chateau,
slim moon rising.

October 13: The randomness of memory

This poem, from a moment this morning...

Phrases from a song
last heard playing in a bar
this past summer.

...leads to this one, from a moment in August:

Night out by myself
on the streets of Old Quebec,
happy observer.

September 1: Les Fraises

Rural, farm-covered L'Ile D'Orleans in the St. Laurence River is the farm basket of Quebec. Strawberries are one of the specialties, with two seasons: summer and fall. After visiting L'Ile D'Orleans today, I checked out the permanent farmers' market near the Old Port Quebec, where I bought a cup of fresh strawberries and ate them on the spot. They tasted of summer, even as the season begins to turn to fall.

Strange to start September
here in Canada
with farm-fresh strawberries.

August 31: Bistro

Drink in this moment:
good glass of cider, a crepe,
time alone to think.

August 30: Le Vieux-Quebec

old stones old streets
I walk in the past for hours
happy amid the crowds
