January 31: Snow. What else?

Wind-whipped snow
scours us of our resistance
to winter.

January 30: While you're away

Eagle flies through snow
carrying my thoughts upriver
past your empty house.

Mouse tracks in snow.
I too burrow in,
sleep all day.

January 27: Morning Meditation 5

the mind snowstorm white
washer's long vibrato chant
calm inside the storm

Blizzard warnings.
Clouds shut down the last blue sky,
sink over the mountain.

January 25: Heron in the snow

Heron in the snow--
old man bent against the cold
we can only watch

January 24: Winter morning on the river

For my mother, watching--

Snow starts to fall.
An Averkamp skating scene
plays out on the river.

Friday, January 23, 2015

January 23: River ice

Iced over, bank to bank--
skaters carve circles above,
river flows below.

January 22: Morning Meditation 4

Continuing with my morning practice with the help of Winter Feast for the Soul.

Before I close my eyes

aligning my focus

Orion rising over the house
Our place in the galaxy

a family of crows grazes
spaces between snow.

January 19: Exposure

Tide turns, draws back--
exposed flats fill with clammers,
cold water fills their tracks.

January 18: Morning meditation 3

Squirrel bounds through snow
ponderously.
Trying to make my mind blank.

Saturday, January 17, 2015

January 17: Joy in unexpected places

In the grocery aisle--
pop song on the sound system,
old man sings along.

Spaces between thoughts:
shadows moving on snow
as the crows shift places.

January 15: Morning Meditation 1

I begin Winter Feast for the Soul, meditating 40 minutes each morning for 40 days.

Morning meditation--
my silent cat, sitting near,
seems to understand.

January 14: Frozen

Two degree morning.
The river has closed its white door
to diving ducks.

Tuesday, January 13, 2015

January 13: Half Moon

Half moon in morning sky--
I smile to see
its pale, familiar face.

Monday, January 12, 2015

January 12: Snow falling on birches

Slowly falling snow--
this morning even the cat
seems mesmerized.

January 11: Birding, Rockport Harbor

We visited Rockport Harbor this morning to look for a Thick-billed Murre reported there yesterday. This relative of the puffin is a rare sight so close to shore at any time of year, so we felt fortunate that the bird surfaced several times quite close to where we were standing on the wharf. And fortunate too that we didn't have to wait any longer in the cold, raw air for the murre to appear.

Shifting skin of ice.
Diving murre, comfortable
in its element.

Thursday, January 8, 2015

January 8: Cold snap

Eight degrees. Haircut--
having my hair blown dry
never felt so good.

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

January 7: Vole

Even the vole eating seed
under the birdfeeder
seems slowed by cold.

Tuesday, January 6, 2015

January 6: Ice

Deepest cold so far.
I stand at the window
watching the river turn to ice.

Monday, January 5, 2015

January 5: The ever-astonishing full moon

I knew it was coming.
So why did the rising moon
surprise me?

Sunday, January 4, 2015

January 4: Puzzle

Waking to snow
all day we build the puzzle,
creating order.

January 3: The pond ices over

Wanting to walk on water
the kids can't wait
to test the new ice.

January 2: After the movie

Moon's even brighter.
In one house we drive past
someone's cooking dinner.

over frozen salt marsh
sunset warms the sky.
